Active Transportation Wayfinding System
The Active Transportation Wayfinding System are signs that help people who aren't in cars find ways to get around the city that are safer, quieter, and more direct than the major roads that are most convenient for driving. It seeks to highlight trails, bikeways, quiet streets, and shortcuts that are inconvenient for driving but better for walking, bicycling, scooting, and rolling. The area covered by signs is small now, but it will eventually cover the city's entire network of trails and bikeways.
Walking in West Sacramento
Walking is the simplest and least expensive mode of transportation. You also get all the health benefits of exercise while transporting yourself at a pace that allows you to experience the sights, sounds and smells that you would miss in a car. It’s easy, inexpensive, invigorating and non-polluting. You don’t have to drive in traffic, look for a parking space or even pay for parking.
Additional resources such as maps and safety tips for getting around on foot are maintained by Civic Thread at http://civicthread.org/our-work/srts/srtsresources/ and http://civicthread.org/our-work/safe-routes-to-school-west-sacramento/.
If your destination seems too far to travel on foot, you can still take advantage of the benefits of walking in the following ways:
- Walk to a bus stop, and take Yolobus.
- Walk to a meeting point for your carpool or vanpool.
- Once you get to where you're heading, walk for small errands and outings.
Bicycling in West Sacramento
West Sacramento strives to provide well-designed and maintained facilities that promote public use and foster cycling and walking as viable and preferred modes of transportation.
The City's network of bikeways includes paved trails, unpaved trails, on-street bike lanes, and bike routes on low-speed streets. You can find a map of the bikeways here:

The Future
The City is working to improve and expand its network of bikeways, walkways, and trails to make it easier to move through the city on foot, mobility device, bicycle, scooter, and electric bicycle. The 2018 Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trails Master Plan is the current document guiding our investments in human-centered transportation. It received an interim update in May of 2024.
